The Artist

My obsession always has been to find meaning in the complexity and beauty of the world, and express it through the most dynamic, powerful and colorful paintings.

From an early age, I spontaneously created my own way to express visual art. I found my inspiration in various aspects of nature – – – among French cities, long rides through the French countryside and early studies of agriculture.

I have spent my lifetime perfecting and attaining mastery of my art. This quest put me on a personal adventure which led me to leave the south of France and settle on the U.S. West coast in Northern California.

During my time in California, I found strong support and understanding of my work. This strengthened my resolve to continue sharing and promoting my artistic concept: “Fractal Syncretism”.

I am pleased to present to you on this website, a comprehensive representation of the body of my work over the past 30 years.

Resumé

“CLOUDS ARE NOT SPHERES, MOUNTAINS ARE NOT CONES, COASTLINES ARE NOT CIRCLES, AND BARK IS NOT SMOOTH, NOR DOES LIGHTNING TRAVEL IN A STRAIGHT LINE.”

— Mandelbrot, in his introduction to The Fractal Geometry of Nature

The concept

I named my artistic concept, “Fractal Syncretism”. It is a pictorial and poetic concept that is at the center of my artwork. My practice of art and the discovery of some texts on the presence of fractal forms in all aspects of the world led me logically to the creation of this concept.

The idea is to show that the fractal world creates some links between all living and non living elements of the universe, especially humans and their different expressions of Art, Science and the Sacred.

The above mention links exist in the structures and behavior of nature, which is a primary source of beauty and poetry.

My artwork uncovers the strength and esthetic components of these links and exposes the complexity of the universe as a whole.

The Medium

All of my paintings are handcrafted, without the use of any digital or other electronic medium.

First, I draw the basic main lines of my work where the major theme are waves, landscapes and theoretical paintings, all inspired by the fractal world.

Then based on these architectures, I spread, using my fingers, several complex layers of oil pastels on the board.

Once the two first steps are completed, I repeatedly and meticulously carves extremely precise patterns with the tip of a knife. I do this to make the colors from the under layers of oil pastel appear and reveal their presence.

This process demands patience and time. One painting alone may take few months or more to complete. The artistic techniques I employ demand exceptional focus and concentration because mistakes cannot be corrected. The realization of this work is a way for me to access a deep meditative state.
